NOMEX is man made fabric, produced by DuPont, and has very good fireproof properties. It is used in Motor Racing and Jet Pilot garments for this very reason. The flame retardant properties of this fabric are not due to treating, but are characteristics of the material itself, meaning no matter how old the garment is, it still retains its effectiveness with almost no deterioration.

The NOMEX garments are tested to various levels, ranging from 4kA for 500ms up to 7kA for 0.5sec. This equates to a 19.6Cal/cm2 rating. The weatherproof parka is actually rated to 10ka/1sec when worn with its woollen zip-in vest.

Temperatures in these explosions reach over 9000°C, and are reduced to a safe level before contact with the skin by the garments. This figure is a guide only, and the level of protection does become better when more than one item of clothing is worn.

Being tested to a certain kA rating for a certain time, means that therefore they are also able to sustain higher fault current arc for shorter time periods. Just because they are only tested to 7kA or 4kA for instance, does not mean this is the maximum fault current they can be used for. It is all time dependant. NOMEX is a permanent flame resistant material, and is also permanent anti-static. The material will not loose these qualities whatsoever with age and provides the best protection possible for the entire lifespan of the garment.
